Night Activities
Every night after supper, we have a surprise Night Activity!
Whether we are in the Gym or on the Playfield, Night Activity is a great way for the whole community to have fun, celebrate each others’ talents, embrace silly playfulness, and enjoy being together.
One night, it might be a Tribe competition like a Junior kickball game or an Intermediate basketball game. Another night, it might be the Camp-wide talent show or a square dance with Alpine. Sometimes, we split up by age group and each group gets to do something different – like perform in a lip sync contest or play a big game of capture the flag. Every night there is something fun to look forward to!
One of the best things about Night Activity at DeSoto is that it is a surprise – no camper knows what Night Activity will be until it’s announced at supper. This means that girls typically spend the day trying to guess what’s coming! This element of surprise certainly heightens the excitement, but it also allows us to practice being in the present moment. If girls knew the camp schedule for the whole month or even a week, they couldn’t enjoy each day as it comes. Being surprised allows us the chance to live day by day and enjoy what comes our way.
At the end of each Night Activity, before heading back to their cabins to get ready for bed and have a cabin devotion, everyone circles up, crosses their arms, and holds hands. In this friendship circle, we sing “Taps” together to tell each other goodnight.
Day is done
Gone the Sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky
All is well, safely rest
God is nigh
God is nigh
