There are a few dogs you may see around Camp, so we want to introduce you! First, meet Sarah’s three dogs: Pippin, Posy, and Maeve. They are the main Camp dogs and you’ll see lots of them.
Pippin turned 3 on February 27th. He is named after a brave and mischievous hobbit, Peregrine Took. Pippin is also a type of sweet apple, which is appropriate because he is the apple of my eye!
Posy will turn two-years-old on July 12th. Her name means “a small bouquet of flowers.” She is full of energy, fiercely loyal, and determined.
Maeve was born in early November. We’ve decided her birthday is November 1st. She is a 7-month-old silver lab mix. Her name means “intoxicating joy” and she is exactly that!
Sometimes, you may see a couple of other pups around. Madeline and Jacob, who work year-round at Camp, have a golden retriever named Boone. He is two years old and a ball of golden energy! You’ll mostly find him in the office or out on a walk with Madeline.
Another pup that sometimes swims over to visit us is Otis. He belongs to our friend Kat, who lives across the river from Camp. Otis feels like the mascot of Mentone, becuase he is often found greeting friends at the Mentone Market or the Post Office - Otis loves to wander! Whenever he comes to DeSoto, we give hime love before we call his mom.
Booney is the most hype little buddy! He gives enthusiastic greetings and loves to hang his head out the car window on mountain drives.
Otis looks a lot like Pippin, but he is bigger and older, so his muzzle is a little gray. He often wears a festive bandana.
It is fun to have furry friends around Camp! Girls often tell us it makes them think of their animals at home.
Did you know that Camp DeSoto used to have a litter of kittens every summer for girls to play with?? They lived near the Health Center, and junior campers loved to come play and cuddle with them. Some of you reading this may remember playing with the camp kittens. Maybe you even took one home from Camp!
And of course, there are the horses. Chief and Dandy just came to Camp this week from their winter pasture. They are ready to help train the horseback staff and get ready for a summer of trail rides and horse shows.
Do you have a memory of a favorite Camp dog, horse, or kitten from the past? Or maybe you have a message for one of the current camp animals? Let us know and we’ll be sure to pass it along.
